As a longtime Spider-Man fan, I went into Brand New Day with considerable expectations. This is the first live-action Spider-Man film since No Way Home in 2021, and it is a strong continuation of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films. More importantly, it remembers that Spider-Man’s greatest conflicts do not have to be multiversal—they can be deeply personal. Brand New Day is an emotionally driven, grounded, street-level film that explores the human costs of being Spider-Man and serves as a welcome change from multiversal stories and Avengers-level threats.

Peter Parker is at his lowest point yet. The story picks up four years after No Way Home, and Peter Parker as we knew him essentially no longer exists. Michelle Jones “MJ” Watson and Ned Leeds, portrayed by Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, respectively, do not remember Peter after Doctor Strange’s memory-erasing spell made the world forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. MJ and Ned have spent the intervening years at MIT and have moved forward with their lives, while Peter’s life outside his Spider-Man alter ego has nearly disappeared. He spends most of his time as Spider-Man, preventing crime throughout New York and defeating villains such as Scorpion, portrayed by Michael Mando. His only meaningful social interactions come through conversations with Jean DeWolff, a New York police detective portrayed by Liza Colón-Zayas.

Peter’s self-imposed isolation and loneliness have changed him psychologically and physically. He develops organic webbing similar to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man after spending four years isolated from MJ and Ned, the friends who supported him throughout the previous trilogy. Peter has increasingly retreated into being Spider-Man, and now Spider-Man is literally becoming more biologically inseparable from Peter Parker. His increased abilities give him another challenge to control while he simultaneously becomes involved with Jean Grey, portrayed by Sadie Sink.

Jean Grey is one of the standouts of the film. Jean searches for her missing sister Sara, following a mysterious clue known as “V-Max” that she believes may lead her to the truth. Her search drives much of the film’s plot and helps create the circumstances that bring Peter back into contact with MJ and Ned. More importantly, Jean mirrors Peter and allows the film to explore themes of loneliness, isolation, trust, and responsibility. Peter and Jean have an uneasy chemistry throughout the film as they gradually learn more about each other. Their relationship becomes increasingly important as the story reaches its emotional climax because both characters are forced to confront what isolation has cost them.

The film has many qualities going for it. Holland, Sink, Zendaya, and Batalon carry the film and provide much of its emotional depth and stakes. Holland and Zendaya’s on-screen chemistry remains compelling even though MJ no longer remembers the history she shared with Peter. That loss gives their interactions a sense of familiarity and distance at the same time. The New York skyline and atmosphere also produce stunning cinematography as Peter struggles with internal changes while confronting an external threat. New York feels like an essential part of the story rather than simply a background for another superhero battle.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton does a good job keeping the film grounded as a true Spider-Man story and provides a welcome change from multiversal threats. The film accurately and vividly conveys the human costs of being Spider-Man as someone who has to make daily ethical choices, endure hardship and vulnerability, and sacrifice his own desires to serve something greater than himself. Peter possesses extraordinary abilities, but the central questions he confronts remain human: What does he owe other people? How much of his own happiness should he sacrifice to help them? And what happens when Peter Parker sacrifices so much to fulfill his responsibility as Spider-Man that there is almost no Peter Parker left?

The overall film is good, although there are a few slow points around the midpoint. Brand New Day is most compelling when it centers on Peter’s internal loneliness, how he navigates life as a full-time superhero, and his relationship with MJ and Ned. It is less compelling when it tries to reassert itself within the wider MCU. The film wants to be both a street-level, friendly-neighborhood Spider-Man story and a bridge to the larger events of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The ending establishes stakes for future MCU films, but the movie is at its strongest when the fate of Peter Parker matters more than the fate of the wider Marvel universe.

Because the film takes place four years after its predecessor, I wish the memory-wiping spell had been reversed by its conclusion. At the same time, leaving the consequences of the spell intact forces Peter to continue living with the sacrifice he made in No Way Home. The film does not need to follow the comics exactly, but the consequences of Peter’s choices need to matter.

The film also features a large ensemble cast, but the supporting characters work best when they contribute to Peter’s moral struggle rather than simply connecting him to the wider MCU. Jon Bernthal portrays Frank Castle/The Punisher as a Spider-Man ally operating as a lethal vigilante against New York’s criminal underworld. The Punisher provides an interesting contrast with Spider-Man because both men believe they have a responsibility to intervene when others are in danger, but they have radically different ideas about what that responsibility permits. Peter continues to place moral restraints on himself that Castle rejects. Castle therefore represents a darker path Peter could follow if isolation and loss overwhelmed his commitment to restraint and compassion.

Other MCU characters contribute to Peter’s story with varying degrees of importance. Florence Pugh returns as Yelena Belova/Black Widow and becomes a valuable contact as Spider-Man searches for information about the larger threat facing New York. Tramell Tillman appears as William “Bill” Metzger of the Department of Damage Control, while Marisa Tomei returns as May Parker in one of Peter’s memories. Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk also helps Peter understand his changing abilities. These appearances expand the film’s connection to the MCU, although they also reinforce the tension between Brand New Day as a self-contained Spider-Man story and its responsibility to establish future Marvel films.

Brand New Day earns its ending by refusing to treat Peter’s isolation as a temporary inconvenience. The finale recognizes that a new beginning cannot erase the cost of what he has lost; it can only test whether he remains capable of connection, trust, and hope. Even when the film brushes against familiar Marvel sequel-building, its final moments return to the human stakes that distinguish Spider-Man from a more generic superhero spectacle.

Peter is no longer a kid, and Holland portrays him with an adult’s maturity. The character has experienced death, grief, loneliness, sacrifice, and responsibility, and Holland allows those experiences to remain visible beneath the mask. His performance alongside Zendaya, Sink, and Batalon gives the blockbuster its emotional center.

The film has also become a massive commercial success, grossing approximately $2.454 billion worldwide and setting new box-office records in the process.*

Spider-Man is the embodiment of the everyman. Everyone can picture themselves under the mask because Peter’s greatest struggles are recognizable even when his abilities are extraordinary. He experiences friendship, loneliness, love, responsibility, grief, failure, and the struggle to determine what he owes to others. Anyone can use their experiences and abilities to help someone else.

Spider-Man unmasked represents a man capable of hope, courage, fortitude, love, and compassion while also experiencing tremendous loss. His powers make him extraordinary, but his choices make him Spider-Man. Brand New Day understands that great responsibility is meaningful precisely because it comes with a personal cost—and Peter continues choosing to help others despite that cost.

4 out of 5 stars.

*Box-office figures and rankings are current as of this review’s publication on September 17, 2026. It is currently the highest-grossing film in North American box-office history in unadjusted dollars, the highest-grossing film released in 2026, and the third-highest-grossing film worldwide of all time, behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
